Did you always want to be a writer?
I found a program from high school earlier this year under a box of paper in the garage. I dusted it off and turned the dog-eared pages. It said, “Yasmín is a junior at EP where she enjoys writing and dancing. She plans to become a short story writer and poet.” I smiled. I had forgotten saying those words. A lot of time has passed since then. I’ve held many jobs, moved, moved again, but I’m glad I found my way back to this path paved with words. So, yes. When I’m asked, “What did you want to be when you grew up?” I get to respond “This. I wanted to be a writer”.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I need music to write. I make or find playlists especially for what I’m writing about. I especially focus on the time period. Sometimes the playlists have music I wouldn’t normally listen to, but I need it to help me create the characters and the mood.
I think I want to be a writer. What should I do?
Read, read, and read. Then write, write, and write more. I read so much as a kid, and scribbled in journals non-stop. It takes work. There aren’t any muses. I wish there were so someone could send them my way. Writing is about being both stubborn and being open to learning more. It’s about being tough and vulnerable at the same time. It’s an odd balance but so gratifying when you see people connect with your work.
